The Bad Little Voice

You would think after this many years of working out and training it would just be automatic. No discipline required.

I found myself really struggling to get up this morning and go to the gym. I was actually late getting there because of the conversation I was having with myself....

"an extra hour of sleep would do you good...you really trained hard this week, why not take a break or be careful your not over training, you might induce an injury"

Actually, my favorite one is " I 'll take the day off and workout extra hard tomorrow!"

As I get to know myself, I recognize the bad little voice inside my head that can come up with 20 good reasons to not stick to my routine.

Instead of arguing with myself, whether to train or get some other things done, I simply have to Ignore.

The toughest part, is just getting to your place of training. It could be at a gym, your basement or the floor beside the bed. For the amount of time it takes to convince yourself to slack off is probably the amount of time it takes to get off your butt and get to your place of training and start working out!

As some unnamed large corporation says...Just Do It!

Hi Sifu Masterson,

I understand what you mean. I have been trying to do more stretching at home and working on the bag and my forms but, I am always looking for excuses to get out of it. I don't like stretching but, it must be done if I am going to get more flexible. Once I start it's great but, it's just starting that's the problem. Great Blog!

I spend WAY too much time arguing with that voice, and by the time I realize that I'm just wasting time, the time's already wasted (if that makes sense..). Ignore it. So that's the key eh? Just roll out of bed and start moving, think about it later. Thanks for the good words!

I think my bad little voice has a megaphone. Perhaps ganging up on it is also a key to conquest. Thanks for the blog, helps sharing the misery.

i find my best tool for conquering said voice is to make practicing and working out as convenient as possible--starting with granting myself that extra hour of sleep and figuring out which part of the day i feel like practicing the most.

the more seamless my routine is the less i tend to rebel against it. clever scheduling ends up working wonders.

It's nice to know that I am not the only one with the little voices. Thanks for blogging.
